In 1961, fourteen students were expelled from Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State University (later to be named Tennessee State University) after being arrested in Mississippi for participating in the 1961 Freedom Rides. Students led protests against the college's action, the expulsions would not be overturned until 2008 when the 14 students received honorary degrees.
